Why I Always Start with a Planning Appointment (And Why You’ll Be Glad We Did)
If you’ve never had a professional family photoshoot before (or even if you have), the idea of booking a session can feel… a little overwhelming.
What should we wear?
Where should we have the photos taken?
What does it cost?
What even happens during a family portrait session?
This is exactly why I always start with an in-person pre-shoot planning appointment.
It’s a relaxed, no-pressure catch-up at the studio where we can get to know each other, talk through the whole process, and make sure we’re on the same page before a single photo is taken.
And honestly? I think it’s one of the most important parts of what I do.
So, what actually happens at a planning appointment?
First and foremost, this is not a sales pitch. It’s not a commitment. It’s just a chance to meet and chat about what you’re hoping for.
We’ll talk about the vibe you’re drawn to — whether that’s a relaxed session at your home, something outdoors in nature, or something else entirely. I’ll walk you through the whole process: from what to expect before, during and after the shoot, to how image selection works, and what the final products will look like.
I’ll also show you all the beautiful print options available, from albums to framed wall art, so you can see what’s possible — and know exactly what your session fee includes (and what any extras might cost, if you choose to upgrade later).
If you’re someone who likes to have all the details up front (like me), this appointment is going to feel like a breath of fresh air.
It’s also the perfect way to break the ice
A lot of families I work with have little ones who are a bit shy, and I totally get it — showing up on the day to meet a stranger with a camera pointed at you? Not exactly the dream!
Meeting in person first helps ease those nerves (for both kids and grown-ups), and gives you a feel for who I am and how I work. That way, when shoot day rolls around, everyone already knows me and what to expect — and that makes for much more relaxed photos.
No pressure, no awkwardness — just a chance to see if we’re a good fit
The truth is, not every photographer is right for every family. That’s why I offer these planning appointments obligation free. If we meet and you decide it’s not quite what you’re after, that’s totally okay. No hard feelings, no awkward follow-up — just a nice chat and hopefully some useful info for you either way.
But if you do decide we’re a good match? You’ll walk away excited, confident, and with a clear picture of what comes next.
