What to Wear for Winter Photos (and Still Feel Like You!)

When you think of family photos in winter, what comes to mind?
Grey skies? Puffy jackets? Shivering kids and forced smiles?

Let me stop you right there.
Winter portraits can be just as warm and joyful as a golden autumn shoot — it just comes down to thoughtful planning (and maybe a few extra layers 😉).

Whether you're planning an outdoor adventure or a cosy in-home session, here's how to dress for the season and still feel like you in your portraits.

🌿 Layer Up, Stay You

The key to staying comfortable and looking good? Layers.

Think textures like knits, denim, flannel, and wool. They add interest to your photos and help everyone stay warm without sacrificing style. Long-sleeve tees or thermals under your outfits are a game-changer, especially for little ones.

Stick with clothes you already love — no need to buy a whole new wardrobe. If you wouldn’t normally wear a scarf or beanie, don’t feel like you have to add one now (unless you want to — accessories can be a great way to add personality and colour).

🏡 In-Home Sessions = Built-In Comfort

Planning a session at home? Amazing.

You get to stay warm, your kids are in their own environment (cue relaxed smiles and real moments), and outfits can be even more low-key. Bare feet and chunky socks are welcome. A cosy jumper, a favourite t-shirt, or that dress you always reach for when you're not quite sure what to wear — they all work perfectly.

And if your child has a beloved stuffed animal or superhero cape that never leaves their side? Let’s include it. These are the details that make your family story yours.

🎨 Colour Tips for Winter

Neutrals, deep greens, rusts, navy, and muted tones work beautifully this time of year — especially against rich winter light or indoor tones. Try to avoid everyone matching exactly (white shirts and jeans, I’m looking at you). Instead, coordinate within a palette and mix in patterns or texture to add interest.
