I recently photographed the MacDonald family at home, and it was such a lovely reminder that family photos don’t need to happen anywhere fancy to feel meaningful. Sometimes the place that matters most is simply the one you’re living your everyday life in.

For Stuart and Sally, photographing their family at home felt especially important. This was their first family home, they’ve beautifully renovated it, and with the thought that they may not be there forever, they wanted to remember this season of life properly. That’s one of the things I love most about in-home family photography in Launceston. It can hold so much more than just what people look like. It also holds the feeling of a place and a chapter of life.

Meet the Family:

The MacDonald family are Stuart and Sally, with their two little boys, Rory who is three and Eddie who is 18 months old.

The boys were super cute, busy, curious, and very much themselves the whole way through. They had a great time rummaging around and exploring, which honestly is exactly what you’d expect from kids that age. Their beautiful dog Cheddar was also very excited to be involved and brought a lot of happy chaos to the session in the best possible way.

There was such a sweetness to this family, and you could really feel how much this home already holds for them.

We photographed the session throughout different parts of the house and yard, including the boys’ bedroom, the lounge room, their beautiful deck, and the backyard under a big tree that was important to them.

One of my favourite things about family photos at home is that they feel layered. The photographs don’t just show faces. They quietly tell the story of where life was happening. The boys in their bedroom, everyone together in the living space, little moments outside in the yard — all of it becomes part of the memory.

For a session with a three-year-old and an 18-month-old, it all went about as smoothly as you could hope for, which was lovely. There was plenty of movement, plenty of energy, and nothing felt forced. I photographed all the combinations that mattered to them: each parent with each child, each parent with both boys, the whole family together, the boys together, and of course some with Cheddar as well.

Sally is American, and she and Stu first met ten years ago in London before building their life here together, which just adds another really lovely layer to their story.

I really loved the images of Rory and Eddie together in their bedroom. There’s something so special about photographing children in a space that is so deeply theirs, especially when they’re still little.

I also loved the family photos on the deck and out in the backyard under the tree. Those are the kinds of spots that might seem ordinary while you’re living in them, but later become some of the most meaningful parts of the photographs.

And any image with Cheddar in it was always going to be a winner.

After their in person photo viewing appointment, Stuart and Sally chose a collection of three framed family portraits in black frames — one 20x14" print and two 10x7" prints.

They also added a bonus memory box with 10 images, which was such a beautiful choice for this session. It meant they could keep a wider collection of the moments that mattered most to them, including the boys individually, each parent with each child, the boys together, and some family images too.

It felt like a really fitting choice for a session like this. The framed prints will give them something to see and enjoy every day, and the memory box lets them hold onto more of this stage while the boys are still so little.

This session was such a lovely example of why family photography doesn’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful. Real life, at home, with your kids exactly as they are, is more than enough.
