Danica & Her Girls — Outdoor Family Photography at Hollybank
There’s something really special about photographing three generations together.
Danica travelled from Devonport with her two daughters, Olivia and Imogen, and little Harrison — Olivia’s 14-month-old son — in tow for their first family photography session with me. We met at Hollybank Forest Reserve just outside of Launceston — a location she chose after browsing through previous sessions on my website and falling in love with the look of it.
When you’re not local, it can feel overwhelming trying to choose the “right” spot. So she did exactly what I always suggest — she let me guide that part.
And honestly? It was a perfect day for outdoor family photography in Northern Tasmania.
Warm (around 26 degrees), slightly overcast, soft light filtering through the trees — no harsh glare, no squinting, just calm, even light that makes everyone look like themselves.
Exactly what we want.
Meet the Family
Danica is mum to Olivia and Imogen, both in their early twenties.
Olivia brought along her 14-month-old son Harrison — who completely stole the show for the first 45 minutes.
Her husband Daniel wasn’t able to be there, as he was off fighting bushfires in Victoria. Of course that was disappointing, but we worked with who we had — and what we had was three generations together, which is pretty special in itself.
This was their first session with me, referred by Danica’s work colleague (a long-time family friend), which always feels like such a privilege. There’s a level of trust that comes with a personal referral, and I never take that lightly.
We started with Harrison on his own.
At 14 months old, you don’t get unlimited time — so I always prioritise little ones first. While they’re fresh, curious, and happy.
And he delivered.
Big smiles. Cheeky expressions. Little determined toddles through the grass.
From there we moved into photos with his mum, with his aunty, with his grandma, and then all four of them together. We also made sure Danica had beautiful images with each of her daughters individually — something I know will only grow in value over time.
About halfway through, we wandered into one of my usual go-to spots… and were immediately attacked by what felt like a million march flies.
If you know, you know.
We laughed, tried to ignore them for about 30 seconds, and then collectively decided it wasn’t worth the battle. So we bailed and moved elsewhere.
That’s the beauty of photographing at Hollybank — there’s space to move, explore, and adjust without stress.
But in that short window, I actually captured the image that Danica later chose for her main piece of wall art.
Right on cue, at around the 45-minute mark, Harrison decided he was officially done and only interested in being held by his mum.
Which is completely normal.
The part most parents don’t realise is this: when kids give you a really great 30–45 minute window, that’s often more than enough. Because we’d started with him while he was happiest, I’d already captured everything we needed.
No stress. No panic. No pushing a tired toddler past their limits.
We finished the session relaxed and unhurried — exactly how family photography should feel.
Favourite Moments
There’s something incredibly grounding about photographing three generations together.
Harrison in the middle of it all, being cuddled and passed between the women who love him most.
Danica standing with her two adult daughters — a quiet moment that says, “We did this. We built this.”
And the four of them together — simple, connected, natural.
Nothing overly posed. Nothing forced.
Just real family.
Artwork Choice
At their viewing appointment, Danica chose a 24×25" canvas of the four of them together — a beautiful statement piece that will anchor the room it lives in.
She also added a memory box with 10 matted prints.
I love this combination for multigenerational family photos. You get one strong piece of wall art that becomes part of daily life, and then a collection of prints that can be gifted, rotated, or simply held and revisited over time.
It’s the kind of artwork that doesn’t just sit on a hard drive — it becomes part of the home.
Wrap-Up
Sessions like this are a reminder that family photography doesn’t have to be complicated.
You don’t need perfect behaviour.
You don’t need everyone available.
You don’t need to know all the best locations.
You just need to decide that this version of your family is worth documenting.
If you’re considering family photography in Launceston or Northern Tasmania and feel unsure about where to start, that’s completely normal. The planning appointment is there for exactly that reason — to walk you through location options, timing, and what will work best for your family.
Because you don’t have to have it all figured out.
That’s my job.
